Navy plane overshoots runway and ends up in ocean, but all 9 aboard escape unharmed

A Hawaiian official said all nine people aboard the US Navy plane that overran the runway escaped injury.

A US Marine Corps spokesman said on Monday that the P-8A overshot the runway at the Marine base and entered Kaneohe Bay.

Another spokesman said the Coast Guard responded but the rescue operation was quickly called off.

The P-8A is often used to hunt submarines and is used in reconnaissance and intelligence gathering.

It is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 commercial jet.

The base is about 10 miles from Honolulu on Oahu.

A Navy plane flying in rainy weather skidded off the runway Monday at a military base in Hawaii and splashed into Kaneohe Bay, but all nine aboard were unhurt, authorities said.

The Coast Guard responded, but the rescue operation was quickly called off, said Petty Officer Ryan Fisher, a Coast Guard spokesman. “It seems that all parties involved have been rescued,” he said.

The P-8A overshot the runway at the Marine base and entered Kaneohe Bay.

Marine Corps Gunnery spokesman Sgt. Orlando Perez had no information about what caused the P-8A to go off the runway at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

Photographs taken by witness Diane Dircks showed the plane in water offshore, a scene reminiscent of the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” when a passenger jet piloted by Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger made an emergency landing in the New York river. All 155 passengers survived.

The P-8A and the Airbus A320 that Sullenberger flew were about the same size.

Dircks and his family had just returned to the dock after rainy weather cut short their pontoon boat trip when his daughter noticed the plane was in the water.

“We ran to the end of the dock, and I took some pictures,” he said.

Dircks, who was visiting from Illinois, said her daughter kept a pair of binoculars on her for birdwatching, so she could see the planes and rescue boats arriving.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call for a downed plane just after 2 p.m., spokesman Malcolm K. Medrano said in an email. It was cloudy and rainy.

Visibility was about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers), said Thomas Vaughan, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Honolulu.

The P-8A is often used to hunt submarines and for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. It is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 commercial jet.

The aircraft belonged to Patrol Squadron 4’s Skinny Dragons stationed on Whidbey Island in Washington state.

The patrol squadron was once based at Kaneohe Bay, but is now deployed to Hawaii on a rotating basis.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii is located about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Honolulu on Oahu.

The base houses about 9,300 military personnel and 5,100 family members. It is one of several major military installations on Oahu.

The base is located in Kaneohe Bay, which is home to coral reefs, hammerhead shark breeding grounds and the University of Hawaii’s marine biology research institute.
