NBA star Ja Morant tried to help an 11-year-old fan named Ellie whose autographed basketball was stolen from her at the Memphis Grizzlies game on Monday night. Ellie’s mother, Lindsay Hughes, took to Facebook to tell her story, and after it grabbed headlines, Morant stepped in to try to help.
Ellie’s Mom Talks On Social Media

Lindsay began her Facebook post by explaining that she doesn’t usually share things like this, but she was “pissed off.” “My daughter (Ellie) has been a huge Grizzlies fan since she was 4/5 years old. He went to EVERY game with my father in law. When he goes to this game it’s the highlight of his week & where his LOVE for basketball comes in & a special bonding time for him & his Gdaddy,” she began her story with a caption of her daughter Ellie.
“Since he was 5 years old, he has had a smaller sized gray basketball on which he has collected several player autographs & personal notes written by players to him. So tonight when he went to the game he took his ball as usual. While he was a few seats away from his assigned seat watching the players return to where they entered the court & cheering them on with other kids/fans, an older ADULT man with 3 kids & an ADULT woman decided they were going to hijack Ellie’s basketball with all her autographs & notes from players sitting with jackets & other items while my FIL was turned around. when this was revealed to Ellie & my FIL, kids, GROWN women & GROWN men ran with their balls tucked under their jackets.”
His post went on to explain that security was alerted but unfortunately they were not arrested. Ellie was heartbroken and worked hard for years to get the ball signed. “He has worked hard for years to get that autograph not to mention how hard it is to get bc the players, unfortunately, can’t sign & interact with every fan & he is very proud that he has almost all the players autographs. yes we know the ball can be replaced but the experience of meeting players through luck, getting signatures & persistence over the years is something he can never get back,” he continued.
Lindsay’s anger is palpable in her words, and while she tries to teach her daughter about being “the bigger person and trying to find the positive in this very unnecessary and painful situation,” it doesn’t stop their sadness. experience
Lindsay also included a message for the thief. “You may have one of the most precious and meaningful things he’s ever acquired but you will NEVER ruin his love for basketball or the Grizzlies and he will continue to go to games and ENJOY them even though your selfish actions have hurt him deeply,” he explained. “He’ll get a new ball and start again but I hope you sleep well at night knowing what you did at 11 and how despicable you really are.”
