Nearly half of Alex Murdaugh’s $1.8M assets going to victims of son Paul’s deadly boat crash

Nearly half of convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh’s remaining assets will go to victims of his son’s fatal boating accident in 2019, a court order issued Monday.

The family of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, who died when Paul Murdaugh, then also 19, drunkenly drove his boat into a bridge, will receive a 29% cut of the assets, court-appointed special arbitrator Walt Tollinson ruled, according to court documents which was seen by The Post.

An additional 16% of Alex Murdaugh’s final assets will go to other survivors of the crash — including Morgan Doughty, Paul’s girlfriend at the time.

Assets used by a court-appointed attorney by selling Alex Murdaugh’s land and farm equipment and liquidating his 401(k) totaled less than $1.8 million, the Post and Courier reported.

A portion of that amount will also be paid to Tollinson for his services, the outlet explained.

Murdaugh, 55, was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and Paul in June 2021, last year.

The once powerful attorney was recently denied a new trial.

The Beach family’s initial March 2019 lawsuit — which sought to hold Paul Murdaugh and other family members accountable for the boating accident — ultimately set in motion a chain of events that exposed years of Alex Murdaugh’s corporate fraud.

During Murdaugh’s trial last winter, prosecutors suggested that the ongoing unraveling of his once charmed life — including alleged theft and drug use — is what drove Murdaugh to slaughter his wife and son.

A court order seized the Hampton County legal heir’s finances in November 2021, when Beach’s family attorney argued that he could no longer be trusted with his money, the Post and Courier explained.

The family of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, who died in the crash, will receive a 29% cut of the assets.

The second largest portion of the assets, 24%, will go to Arthur Badger, one of the clients Murdaugh stole from, Tollinson’s ruling revealed.

Murdaugh’s former law firm will get 14% to pay the damages it is seeking after paying back some former clients money Murdaugh took from them, the Post and Courier said.

Some of the firm’s cuts will also be passed on to some other financial victims, he added.

The law firm’s new eponym, Johnny Parkey, will take a 15 percent cut.

Parker previously claimed he loaned Murdaugh $477,000 in 2021, but was never repaid.

Claims against Murdaugh’s assets total more than $100 million.

In his final order, Tollinson said he “considered the amount and extent of injury and destruction” caused by Murdaugh when weighing claims from boating accident victims as well as those who were financially and legally taken advantage of.

“In a perfect world, there would be unlimited funds,” he wrote.

The Beaches welcomed the development of the case.

“The family is pleased to be one step closer to no contact with Alex Murdaugh,” the Beaches’ attorney, Mark Tinsley, told The Post Tuesday morning.

“It is unfortunate that all of Alex’s stolen money cannot be recovered and paid back to all the people he hurt. The Beach family has never seen this effort as anything other than a fight for accountability and change. We hope that in the future, someone will take into account what has happened here and do the right thing to not allow or even prevent underage drinking,” he said.

In addition to his murder conviction, Murdaugh has pleaded guilty to several state and federal financial crimes, the Post and Courier said.

He is looking at 27 years in prison for that offense, in addition to two life sentences for manslaughter and an unspecified federal sentence.

Murdaugh also remains named in at least eight lawsuits related to the 2019 boating accident and his financial misconduct.
