Nepal stopped issuing permits for its citizens to work in Russia on Friday after 10 Nepalese soldiers were killed while serving in the war in Ukraine.
Nepal has also officially asked Russia not to recruit its citizens into the Russian army and to compensate the families of those killed in the fighting in Ukraine.
Nepal’s government said at least 200 of its nationals were working for the Russian army, and foreign minister NP Saud told the state news agency RSS that 100 Nepalis were missing in the country.
Nepalese soldiers, known as Gurkhas, are legendary for their skills on the battlefield. They served in the British and Indian armies following India’s independence in 1947 under the tripartite agreement. There is no agreement with Russia for troops to fight in the nearly two-year conflict in Ukraine, according to reports.
Nepali foreign workers must obtain permission from the government to accept work abroad. The permit entitles them to express support in the event of an emergency abroad and compensation to their families in the event of death.
