Netflix Reveals Plans For Chris Rock’s History Making 2023 Comedy Special

Chris Rock is back in the spotlight with an upcoming Netflix show.

The first show of its kind will see the comedian launch his second Netflix stand-up show titled “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.” The show, which is scheduled to launch on March 4, 2023, will make Rock the first artist to perform live on the streaming service, and it is set to be broadcast globally.

Netflix Releases First Look At Chris Rock’s Upcoming Stand-Up Special

Over the Christmas weekend, Netflix dropped the trailer, giving fans who were waiting to see what to expect from the Rock special with a short clip. The video begins by showing the 57-year-old staring straight into the camera while sitting in a dressing room.

His composure was soon interrupted by a knock on the door, followed by someone on the other end, telling him, “Chris, they’re ready for you.” Multi-hyphenate then steps into action, walking through the backstage area with a timer counting down in the background.

Rock finally arrived on stage, where he was met by a screaming audience and bright lights. Set to the soundtrack of Bun B’s “The Best Is Back,” the clip closes with details of when and where the special will air.

The trailer, shared by Netflix, sparked chatter in the comments, with one excitedly declaring, “let’s go!” Another comment wasn’t as kind as a second observer added, “Netflix will be L in 2023, boutta lose everyone.”

“Boooooohhhh insulting others to make others laugh ????” the third person questioned. A fourth Instagram user commented, “Oooo you know who he’s talking about on this,” and a fifth claimed, “The guy trying to act tough after getting slapped.”

“Closed caption provided by: Will Smith,” a sixth person joked, and a seventh repeated, “This special will slap…no pun intended.” “Finally, Fresh Prince Roast!! I always like them freshly baked,” joked another.

This is not the first time that fans will react in such a way. Last month, The Blast reported that the filmmaker had become the victim of a joke when news of the Netflix special broke. Although details of the plan were unclear at the time, people were quick to fill the comments section of the announcement post, with many poking fun at Rock.

While one jokingly played on Smith’s first name, writing, “Will he do it?” another advised, “Don’t let Will near him is all I’m saying.” The fifth person explained:

“I’m telling you guys, Chris getting slapped by Will at the Oscars was the BEST thing that could have happened to him lol he became instantly relevant and now look, his own live streaming show on Netflix. Wild.”

The “Everybody Hates Chris” creator previously worked with Netflix in 2018 for his special, “Chris Rock: Tamborine.” The show was very successful — a factor that may have influenced the streaming platform’s decision to partner with him a second time.

In August, Rock told the audience at his Phoenix stand-up set that he was turning down an offer from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to host next year’s Oscars. The Blast shared that the four-time Primetime Emmy Award winner joked that getting back on the Oscar stage right after her fiasco with Smith was akin to returning to the scene.

He also used the publicized OJ Simpson murder trial as a reference, claiming that accepting the offer was like asking the former football player’s wife, Nicole Simpson, to “go back to the restaurant.”

You’ll recall that drama ensued at the Oscars earlier this year when the “Emancipation” actress slapped Rock after the latter took a playful swipe at Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia.

Despite the severity of the episode, the “Death at a Funeral” star has avoided talking about it publicly until her Phoenix show. Rock also claimed that he had turned down an offer to appear in a Super Bowl commercial during the event.

Additionally, an ABC executive — Craig Erwich — confirmed to the news outlet that the network is interested in having Rock host the Oscars for a second time. The comedian has hosted the event twice, once in 2005 and again in 2016.
