Netflix Sued For A Second Time Over ‘Outer Banks’ Series

Netflix accused of stealing the premise for Outer Banks… again. An author claims the show is the plot of his novel.

‘Outer Banks’ Is A Hit For Netflix

The TV show is in its third season on the streaming platform and it has been a hit for Netflix. Author Jeff Wilson is happy the show is doing well for Netflix but as the author of a novel he wrote titled, “Queen Anne’s Revenge”, which he claims the show is spoofing, it’s not that great.

Wilson is suing the streaming giant because he says there are more than a few similarities between the book and the show starring Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Jonathan Daviss, and Rudy Pankow.

In his lawsuit obtained by TMZWilson explains that his novel, published in 2013 follows four friends on a legendary treasure hunt around their town near the outer banks of North Carolina.

Wilson also claimed that his book had some success and was featured on the Discovery and History Channel. And here’s the kicker, Wilson claims that the show’s creators even admitted to using books from the author for inspiration to write the series.

Apparently he was insinuating that his novel could be one they inspired. Are there many books that use the North Carolina Outer Banks as their backdrop? To further prove his point, Wilson said the story arc in his novel is the same as the series.

He also claimed that the interests in the main characters were the same. follow TMZ in fact he said, the plot points and settings are very, very similar.

Netflix Sued For Copyright Infringement

The streaming platform did not have to go to litigation with Wilson suing for copyright infringement. He wants them to pay whatever they have made on the series and stop any kind of distribution and promotion Outer Banks.

Wilson isn’t the only author who claims that Netflix stole from them to create this great role. Novelist Kevin Wooten sued Netflix in 2020 and claimed that his book “Pennywise: The Hunt for Blackbeard’s Treasure!”.

The novel was written in 2016 and Wooten claims the series ripped off his story in a big way. the novel is about a man who is hunting for Blackbeard’s treasure with his twin nephews and a dog.

To reiterate, Outer Banks were about four teenagers. The case was immediately dismissed in 2021 when US District Judge Timothy C. Batten Sr. found the novel to be completely different. “To be sure, both jobs involve shipwrecks and treasure hunts,” Batten admitted in his judgment.

“But to analyze their plots at such a high level of abstraction would make every work involving the hunt for buried treasure vulnerable to copyright infringement.” Wooten’s legal team contends that had the case been tried before a jury, the outcome might have been different.

Now we wait and see how this case unfolds.
