Two Nevada state troopers were struck and killed by an impaired driver in a hit-and-run in Las Vegas early Thursday morning as they conducted a routine check on the state’s busiest highway.
Jemarcus Williams, 46, is accused of killing a trooper and eluding law enforcement for several hours after his vehicle was found at a nearby apartment complex, Las Vegas police Undersheriff Andrew Walsh said during a news conference.

Williams faces charges of reckless driving, DUI, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
Since his alleged crimes left two people dead, the charges include sentencing enhancements, which could add decades to Williams’ sentence if he is convicted.

Dozens more law enforcement officers were seen saluting the bodies draped in American flags as they were brought in by uniformed state troopers.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo ordered all US flags in the state to be flown at half-staff until the soldier’s funeral.
“This is a tremendous loss for Nevada law enforcement, the city of Las Vegas, and our entire state,” Lombardo said in a statement. “As we mourn these soldiers, we will never forget their courage, bravery, and sacrifice.”

The deaths of the two Nevada state troopers come nearly three years after another trooper was attacked and killed on Interstate 15.
In 2021, trooper Micah May is killed while officers chase a suspected car thief across Las Vegas and neighboring North Las Vegas.
