New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez’s trial on charges he took bribes — including cash and $150,000 in gold bullion — will begin May 6, a federal judge ruled Monday.
Judge Sidney Stein, during the trial in Manhattan federal court, urged prosecutors to turn their attention to the high-profile corruption case, which accuses Menendez and his wife of trading to help three New Jersey businessmen and the Egyptian government.
Prosecutor Paul Monteleoni said the pre-trial “discovery” process had been delayed because some of it involved confidential information, and said the evidence – described as “quite substantial” – could take several more weeks to complete.
Stein said that the defense has to present all its evidence by Dec. 4.
“I will definitely try to keep that date,” said the judge.
Menendez, 69, was not in court after his lawyer argued that he needed to be in Washington DC for his Senatorial duties.
His wife, Nadine Menendez, 56, attended the hearing – with the same Gucci bag she brought to court last week when she was arraigned.

The couple is accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes – including at least 13 bullion bars and a Mercedes-Benz convertible, according to federal indictments.
They both pleaded not guilty at their first court appearance in the case on Sept 27.
The senator was released on a $100,000 bond, while his wife was released on a $250,000 bond secured by the couple’s home in Englewood Cliffs, NJ.
