A raging inferno broke out at a new water park in Sweden on Monday, with flames destroying several under-construction outdoor waterslides and related facilities, authorities said.
A massive fire engulfed several unopened water slides, including one with a 43-foot drop, at the Oceana water park in Gothenburg — sending plumes of black smoke over Sweden’s second-largest city.
Horrific footage captured by witnesses showed the slide, which had been scheduled to open in the coming months, engulfed in flames as several fire engines descended on the area.
At least three explosions sent debris from nearby buildings strewn over the burning waterslide.
The water park is a new addition to Gothenburg’s Liseberg amusement park — one of the largest amusement parks in the Nordic region.
“The fire started in one of the water rides outside the building and then spread throughout the building,” Liseberg said in a statement.

A subcontractor was doing some installation when the fire started, a spokesman for the NCC group, which is the general contractor for the construction, told Swedish broadcaster SVT.
