Nikki Haley has low Iowa expectations, but allies’ spending suggests otherwise

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has played down the importance of winning Iowa for her 2024 White House ambitions, but her allies’ super PAC spending shows her supporters hope she can at least overhaul Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the Hawkeye State.

SFA Fund, Inc. — a super PAC backing the former ambassador to the United Nations — has spent more than $4 million in Iowa against DeSantis since an Oct. 30 Des Moines Register poll showed the pair tied for second behind former President Donald Trump, federal receipts reviewed by the show The Post.

The latest edition of the poll, released Monday, showed Haley in third place with 16% support, trailing DeSantis by three percentage points — and trailing Trump by 35 points.

Notably, Haley’s super PAC spent no funds attacking the 45th president.

The spending signaled that Haley’s supporters see the potential to unseat DeSantis in Iowa, where the Florida governor has focused much of her campaign.

As Haley has surged in the polls, the two White House candidates have increasingly pursued each other on the debate stage and over the airwaves, sparring over China, Gaza and the respective governor’s records.

“The way I see it, we just have to do well in Iowa,” Haley told a town hall in Sioux City on Friday. “I don’t think that means we have to win, but I think it means we have to put in a good performance.”

Haley’s campaign has emphatically declared her “second” in Iowa – even though polls show DeSantis vying for the coveted seat – and has pointed to the support of the Koch-backed USA for Prosperity Action network, which they claim will boost her ground game in Iowa through “unparalleled army and grassroots resources.”

Haley, 51, is also expected to be endorsed by New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu on Tuesday night, giving her her first major state boost over DeSantis and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

DeSantis and Haley aren’t fighting over New Hampshire as much as Iowa, as Haley leads the Florida governor by more than 10% in the Granite State

SFA Fund, Inc. spent just $170,000 on anti-DeSantis expenses in New Hampshire, federal receipts show.

The Super PAC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Post.
