Nikki Haley rakes in cash — from Democrats looking to stop Trump

As Nikki Haley gains support from Republican kingmakers, some wealthy Democratic donors have also begun quietly funneling cash to her campaign, On The Money has learned.

In a desperate bid to fend off Donald Trump’s possible GOP nomination, a group of DNC donors sent checks to Haley — even as they continued to publicly voice support for Biden and push for his White House bid, sources said.

Participants are pocketed in seeing the unusual diversion of funds as an “opposition effort” against another Trump presidency, according to insiders.

“If we’re going to lose, let’s lose to him, not Trump,” one source said of the Democratic donor’s thinking.

Wealthy donors can obscure contributions to candidates by funneling cash through shell companies to political nonprofits — donations referred to as “dark money.”

In fact, Haley’s left-leaning supporters have not been silent about their efforts, the source added, saying, “They don’t want the Biden-Harris team to be swayed.”

Haley still trails Trump dramatically – in New Hampshire she polled around 20% to Trump’s 42%, according to a CNN poll.

Still, that’s a healthy increase of 8 percentage points over CNN’s previous poll taken in September.

A lot of money can go a long way, says Charles Myers, chairman of Signum Global Advisers.

“If you get a handful of millionaires to support you, in American politics that means you have unlimited money,” Myers said.

In the last election cycle, Democrats spent $53 million to boost fringe GOP candidates in primaries in an effort to give mainstream Democrats a better chance of getting elected, according to the Washington Post.

The controversial strategy to capture the Republicans’ chance of winning the general election has worked.

This time, donors say the approach is different because the goal is to give voters two centrist candidates and prevent the far-right candidate from winning.

“Like all things around Trump, we’re in new territory, including political fundraising,” the source said.

The list of Haley’s supporters is growing rapidly.

On Tuesday, he got an endorsement from the Koch Brothers’ broad political network, Americans for Prosperity Action — a serious endorsement that could help his base’s game in the primary.

Haley “has what it takes to lead the policy agenda to confront our nation’s greatest challenges and help ensure our nation’s best days are yet to come,” Americans for Prosperity Action said in its announcement. “With the grassroots and data capabilities we bring to this race, no other organization is better equipped to help it do so.”

On Wednesday, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon urged all business leaders to “help” Haley’s campaign.

“Even if you’re a very liberal Democrat, I urge you, help Nikki Haley too. Get an option on the Republican side that might be better than [Donald] Trump,” Dimon said at The New York Times DealBook summit.

This week billionaire Ken Langone, who endorsed Trump in 2016, revealed he was considering endorsing Haley and would meet with her in the coming days.

Earlier this month, billionaire Ken Griffin — who has endorsed Ron DeSantis — said he was “actively considering” supporting Haley’s campaign.
