Nitin Gadkari was born on 27 May 1957 (age 66 years; in 2023) in Nagpur, Bombay State (now Maharashtra). His zodiac sign is Gemini. His full name is Nitin Jairam Gadkari. He did his schooling from a local school in Nagpur. He is pursuing an LL.B. and M.Com from Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He also has a diploma in Business Management.

Nitin Gadkari was born in Deshastha Brahmin Family. His father, Jairam Ramchandra Gadkari, is a farmer and his mother, Bhanutai Gadkari, is a housewife. He has a sister, Manisha Kishor Totade, who is married. She is married to Kanchan Gadkari, a social worker. They have a daughter, Ketki Gadkari (Youngest), and 2 sons, Nikhil Gadkari (Eldest) and Sarang Gadkari. All of them are married.
Political career
Nitin Gadkari has been interested in politics since childhood. He joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976. He actively participated in the university student elections which resulted in ABVP winning all the student body seats of Nagpur University. In 1981, Gadkari organized the ABVP’s 28th National Convention, where he was elected as the President of the Nagpur Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Graduate Constituency in 1990. He was appointed Minister of Public Works Department (JKR) in 1995 in the Maharashtra government. He served as an MLC for 4 consecutive terms from 1990 to 2008. He became the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1996.
He was appointed as the Maharashtra BJP President in 2004. In December 2009, Gadkari was appointed as the BJP National President. He held this position until January 2013; when Rajnath Singh was appointed as National President of BJP. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur Constituency and won. He was appointed as the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways in the Narendra Modi government.
Gadkari was given additional charge of Ministry of Shipping and Water Resources, and Ministry of River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation in September 2017 after the death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde. In 2019, he contested again in the General Election from Nagpur Lok Sabha Constituency and won. He defeated his Congress opponent Nana Patole by a margin of over 2 Lakh votes. On 31 May 2019, he was appointed as the Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways, & Shipping and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
Controversy
- In November 2011, the body of a young girl was found in Gadkari’s car. When investigated, it was found that he was the son of his house cleaner. The girl’s family claimed that she had been attacked and killed; because there are 19 injuries on his body. Doctors said he died of suffocation because he couldn’t get out of the car and the marks on his body were not an attack. The girl’s family accused Gadkari of using his position to influence doctors and the police as no action was taken against Gadkari.
- In 2012, Gadkari was accused of money laundering and forgery by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). It was revealed that his company Purti Group has given loans to several companies that have invested in this company. Further investigation revealed money laundering.
- In 2014, Gadkari announced the end of the ban on e-rickshaws as public transport. The media pointed out that his company, Purti Group, was involved in the manufacture of e-rickshaws; the decision to end the ban will benefit him directly. Then he explained that none of his companies were involved in the manufacture of e-rickshaws.
- In 2014, before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, a show-cause notice was issued to him by the Election Commission. The notice asked him to explain his statement during the rally asking voters to accept bribes given by other parties to lure them but then vote for the party they want.
