A New Jersey inmate convicted of attempted murder has been charged after he escaped from custody just months ahead of his scheduled release date, authorities said.
Edward Berbon, 54, was on a work detail when he escaped from custody in Mount Laurel Township on Tuesday, the Mount Laurel Police Department announced.
Berbon was assigned to a halfway house at the time, and is scheduled to be released on Feb. 12, 2024, the department continued.
The New Jersey Department of Corrections and Mount Laurel police did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on the search.
Berbon – described as a 250-pound, 6-foot-tall man with blue eyes – has been in custody since Sept. 14, 2004, when he was arrested on attempted murder charges stemming from an incident on July 21 of that year, DOC records show.
