Nor’easter wallops Northeast with over half-foot of snow for some cities, leaves others with historic deficit

A powerful nor’easter slammed into parts of the Northeast on Saturday, bringing the region’s first major winter storm of the year and a flurry of snow, wind and freezing rain.

Heavy snow fell across Pennsylvania and western Maryland on Saturday evening, with accumulations of around 1-2 inches per hour, causing slick roads.

“This is a very interesting storm system,” said FOX Weather Winter Storm Expert Tom Niziol. “It’s going to be a hit.”

A widespread Winter Storm Warning is in effect for several inches of snow across inland areas in the mid-Atlantic, Northeast and New England, including Boston and the northern Interstate 95 corridor.

In all, about 35 million Americans from Virginia to Maine are under winter weather warnings.

West of I-95, temperatures will remain cold enough for all snowfall, with accumulations from Pennsylvania into New England.

The storm’s big winners will be Upstate New York, northeastern Pennsylvania and New England, where heavy snow will last the longest.

Cities such as Boston and Worcester in Massachusetts, Manchester in New Hampshire, Hartford in Connecticut, Albany in New York, Providence in Rhode Island and Scranton in Pennsylvania have a high probability of seeing up to 6 inches of snow, with parts of Upstate New York and inland New York England may have a foot of snow by the time all is said and done on Sunday.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was one of the communities to end a nearly year-long wet streak as the last significant snowfall was on January 25, 2023.

“I’m really excited (about the snow),” said Chris Reese, owner of Cannon Coffee in Hagerstown, Maryland. “My kids are young, and I feel like my youngest hasn’t had real snow in years. And growing up here, we had huge snow storms. And I remember jumping off the first floor roof of my kitchen into this giant pile of snow. And I’m excited for my kids to experience good snow this year.”

As fun as it is for those at home, winter weather keeps snowplow drivers busy.

“All the guys out there are trying to do their best to get it done for you guys,” said Keith, who is part of a snowplow crew for public works in Hagerstown. “If you can just stay at home, that’s the best thing to do, and that way, we can try to get it done as quickly as possible for you all. The less traffic, the faster we can get it done.”

“As we go into Sunday, a second piece of energy comes into this system, and you’ll see how the winds will shift Sunday during the day to more of a northeasterly track,” Niziol said. “When it does that, colder air from northern New England slides south, and we’re going to get a blast of snow Sunday afternoon in that area. That will be important.”

Snow is expected to be wet and heavy rather than dry and powdery. Heavy snow and strong winds can cause downed trees and power outages.

New York, Philadelphia will likely miss the accumulated snow

On the other hand, while areas like New York City and Philadelphia will see snowflakes fly on Saturday, an oceanic influence with water temperatures in the 40s and 50s will prevent coastal communities from New York City south from seeing much, if any, collection.

“The I-95 corridor from DC up through Philadelphia — it’s too warm for any significant snow,” Niziol said.

That means the current record streak of consecutive days without an inch of snow is likely to continue in Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Forecasters around New York City, including Central Park, saw less than a quarter of an inch of snow fall before mixed rain moved in.

As of Saturday afternoon, the heaviest snowfall totals occurred in the Appalachians that make up Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Many communities saw more than half a foot of snow, which was expected.

Snowfall watches for the entire storm system will continue to increase as the storm system pushes eastward and impacts cities in the Northeast and New England.
