Northeast coastal storm arrives ahead of Thanksgiving weekend travel

Ahead of the holiday week when more than 50 million Americans plan to travel, the Fox Forecast Center is monitoring the arrival of a cold front and a storm system in the Eastern Seaboard that is expected to end a beautiful weekend stretch in the Northeast.

According to the forecast model, rain is expected to start falling on Friday, with the impact of the coastal low felt on Saturday.

Impacts are expected to vary by location, with coastal communities in New England in line for the worst impacts, which could include rain and strong winds.

“You have a front approaching from the west that helps guide this system to the coastline. We’ve had two dry weekends in a row in the Northeast. It’s not going to be three by the looks of things,” said Fox Weather meteorologist Ian Oliver.

Fortunately, for most of the I-95 corridor, any round of rain is expected to stay on the lighter side and be brief.

Cities like Philadelphia and New York are expected to see no more than an inch of rain accumulation, while Boston may see an inch or two, depending on how quickly tropical moisture moves up north.

The precipitation may include snow showers in higher elevations of New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

Communities closer to the center of the system face the potential for heavier precipitation.

Places like Martha’s Vineyard and Downeast Maine have the potential for several inches of precipitation through Saturday.

“Especially, coastal Maine, Downeast Maine … it was a tough year. They could see some pretty heavy rain over the next few days with this storm,” Fox Weather meteorologist Haley Meier said.

The National Weather Service office in Boston said it does not expect any flooding concerns from the storm system, but it will be windy at times.

Wind gusts of at least 20 to 30 mph are expected to affect the region on Friday and continue through Saturday.

Despite the chilly conditions, temperatures are expected to drop to well below normal — a pattern that could persist through the Thanksgiving holiday week.
