Nupur Sharma is an Indian Lawyer and Politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has held various important positions in his party. He is best known for contesting the 2015 Delhi Assembly Elections against Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal.

Nupur Sharma was born into a Brahmin Family on 23 April 1985 (age: 38 years; in 2023) in New Delhi, India. He had his primary education at Delhi Public School in New Delhi. For higher education, he enrolled in Delhi University Hindu College and got his LLB degree. Nupur obtained an LLM degree from the London School of Economics, London, England.

Career
Nupur has been active in politics since her college days at Delhi University. On the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad ticket, he was elected as the president of Delhi University Students’ Union. He has also been a youth ambassador of Teach for India (joined with Teach for America). He has held various important positions in the Party such as National Executive Committee member of BJP youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), National Media in-charge with BJYM, member of “Yuva,” BJP Working Committee, and State Executive Committee member, Delhi BJP.
Nupur has been the spokesperson of her party and has participated in various debates in the media to represent her party’s views. In the 2015 Delhi State Election, he contested against Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and Veteran Indian National Congress leader Kiran Walia. However, he lost the election but emerged as the runner-up.
Controversy
Words that insult Islam
On 5 June 2022, the Bharatiya Janata Party suspended Nupur Sharma for making insulting remarks about the Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim community during a televised debate. According to a statement issued by the BJP, the party respects every religion and does not allow any of its members to make statements that insult any religion. The statement reads,
BJP strongly condemns insult to any religious personality of any religion. The Bharatiya Janata Party also opposes any ideology that insults or degrades any sect or religion. BJP does not promote such people or philosophies. Over the thousands of years of Indian history every religion has grown and developed. The Bharatiya Janata Party respects all religions.”
Following the uproar, Nupur Sharma apologized unconditionally and said that she never intended to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments. On June 9, 2022, he was booked by the Delhi police for attempting to disturb public order and incite the public in sedition.” On July 1, 2022, the supreme court recalled Nupur Sharma for her statement which led to several violence, unrest, demolitions and arrests in several States of the country. While presiding over the Vacation Court comprising Justice JB Pardiwala, Justice Surya Kant observed verbally,
The way she has sparked emotions across the country… This woman is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in this country.”
On 10 August 2022, as per the orders of the Supreme Court of India, all cases filed across the country against Nupur Sharma for her comments about Prophet Muhammad were transferred to Delhi.
