NY troopers hunt for brute who shot animal sanctuary owner’s pet German Shepherd

State troopers in upstate New York are hunting a brutal man who shot an animal shelter owner’s pet dog named Kolija, leaving the bloodied pup limping home in agony.

Police said Thursday that the 80-pound, two-year-old Great Pyrenees German Shepherd mix was wandering in the woods in Athens, which is about 30 miles south of Albany, when he was shot in the right hind leg on Jan. 1. .

The sick puppy had to limp home to the And-Hof Animal Shelter in Catskill where he lived.

Kolija’s owner, And-Hof president Kurt Andermach, took the injured pet to Kingston Animal Hospital, where the dog was treated for gunshot wounds, a broken pelvis and a broken femur.

Kolija later underwent surgery at an animal hospital in Stamford, Connecticut, according to police.

“His back leg is broken,” Andernach said in a video posted on Facebook. “The femur bone and also the pelvis were destroyed and the joint also required reconstructive surgery.

“He’s going to have a very, very long recovery,” he said.

Andernach said medical bills have reached $14,000 and are expected to climb higher — prompting the shelter to launch a gofundme.com page.

The site had raised $2,510 by Thursday evening.

“Evidence uncovered through the DEC and State Troopers investigation, as well as the position and size of the entry and exit wounds, strongly suggests that Kolija was shot from behind and at close range – most likely because he was running away,” the sanctuary said in another Facebook post.

“Since the exact location of the incident has been identified, the ongoing investigation confirms that the hitherto unknown shooter was trespassing at that time,” the post said.
