NYC dad pleads guilty to attempted murder after mowing down wife with children in car before stabbing her: ‘Horrifying brutality’

A 36-year-old New York City father told his three children to buckle up before he hit their mother with a Ford Explorer, jumped out and stabbed her in the heart — just days after Christmas.

Stephen Giraldo pleaded guilty to attempted murder Tuesday after the attack left his wife Sophia Giraldo, 41, with “severe nerve damage,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement.

The victim survived.

Giraldo is expected to receive up to 25 years in prison at his sentencing in October.

The attack happened around 5:20 a.m. on Dec. 27, according to Katz’s office.

Surveillance video captured Giraldo pulling up to the victim’s home in a white Ford Explorer. He was supposed to send their children, ages 6, 9 and 11.

When their mother got out, according to prosecutors, Giraldo told the children to “put your seat belts on,” and hit the gas.

The car jumped the curb, and the impact sent it off to one side — but the driver wasn’t done.

“Giraldo crawled over his son in the front passenger seat and got out of the window of the vehicle and then stabbed his wife with a knife,” according to the prosecutor.

Sophia Giraldo suffered “severe nerve damage,” a broken leg and a stab wound through her heart, prosecutors said.

“The horrific brutality of the attack, and the fact that it was carried out in full view of the victim’s three young children, is causing outrage and grief across the city,” Katz said Tuesday. “We welcome the guilty plea and seeing a violent and dangerous man go to prison, but today’s verdict does not undo the lifelong pain and suffering the defendant has caused.”
