An NYPD detective working in Commissioner Edward Caban’s office was arrested Saturday for shoplifting at a Home Depot on Long Island, authorities said.
Detective Specialist Cristina Cancel, 54, is accused of stealing $160 worth of merchandise from the shelves of a home improvement store in Deer Park, according to Suffolk County police.
Cancel — which raked in more than $150,000 last year — is accused of stealing $130 in merchandise around 10:15 a.m., and then another $30 before noon.
It is unclear what items he allegedly stole.
When he was questioned by police, the 19-year-old veteran allegedly gave them a false name and date of birth.
Cancel, of Hicksville, was charged with two counts of Petit Larceny and false impersonation.
He has been suspended without pay, NYPD officials confirmed.

Messages left at the number to Cancel are not immediately returned.
The cop accused of using sticky fingers has served in the Office of the Police Commissioner since July, the same month Caban was tapped to lead the NYPD.
In 2015, Cancel was disciplined by the department for using another officer’s password to search the NYPD database for personal reasons.
He lost 10 vacation days because of the incident.

In fiscal year 2023, Cancel took home $156,311, of which about $52,000 was overtime pay, records show.
Cancel joined the team in 2004 at age 35 after spending years working at a brokerage house, he told WNYC at the time.
He was assigned to Midtown South and was one of 12,000 officers assigned to the Republican National Convention to combat potential violence.
