New York University has hired a well-known Israel hater to head a new center dedicated to indigenous studies, drawing the ire of the school’s top leaders.
NYU announced the appointment of Eve Tuck, a professor of critical race and indigenous studies at the University of Toronto, on Oct. 9 — just two days after Hamas terrorists killed 1,400 Israeli civilians.
Although his work focuses on indigenous peoples, he has found common causes of Palestinian violence – including defending the deadly rampages of Hamas.
“Unprovoked is dishonest framing. A free Palestine is possible because of how Palestinians have tried to survive and recreate another frame, another future,” he said in an October 7 post to Bluesky, a liberal social media network.
Days later, as Israelis were still counting their dead, he called Hamas’s “resistance” to Israel “resolute.”
On October 26, Tuck signed a letter blaming Israel for the slaughter of Hamas.
“Two weeks ago the horrific violence in Gaza was the result of 75 years of Israeli occupation,” the letter read. “The brutality of the Israeli apartheid regime in Palestine is unrelenting, in violation of international law, and consistent with the colonial-settler project around the world.
“The colonized people have the right to defend themselves and resist colonial violence. We support the liberation of Palestine and their right as an oppressed people to resist colonization and genocide.”

Israel has not occupied Gaza since 2005 and the Palestinian population has increased fivefold since 1960, according to the United Nations.
“I’m surprised that the hiring continues amid this toxic atmosphere,” said Elliott Bross, a board member of NYU’s Stern School of Business. “I call on NYU to terminate his contract immediately,”
Stan Polovets, a board member of NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, said, “This type of rhetoric fuels antisemitism, and I urge Ms. Tuck to reconsider her support for that statement.”
In the immediate aftermath of the current violence, a pro-Hamas academic justified the slaughter by tweeting “decolonization is not a metaphor” – a direct reference to a paper of the same title co-authored by Tuck.

NYU has been plagued by antisemitic protests recently. NYU students were caught tearing down signs with the faces of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas.
In a statement, the school declined to condemn Tuck.
“NYU’s perspective is that violence is immoral; that there is no justification for committing acts of violence, forever; and placing blame on victims of violence is untenable,” said spokesman John Beckman.

Tuck told The Post: “I condemn the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, and the hostage taking, whose safe and speedy return I sincerely hope. I reject antisemitism; it is disgusting and indefensible.”
