Guillermo Söhnlein, co-founder of OceanGate, has responded to criticism of the company amid the Titan sinking tragedy. While talking to Insider, he criticized “Titanic” director James Cameron, who blamed the company’s lax safety procedures for the disaster.

Söhnlein claims that “the whole media revolves around how unsafe it is [the expedition] is based on David Lockridge, Will Kohnen of the Marine Technology Association, Jim Cameron, who knows nothing about this … and Karl Stanley. Four people.”

He added that Cameron was “a very experienced ocean explorer and a sub-man himself, but knew nothing about OceanGate and that stuff.”

After it was confirmed that the submarine had exploded, several people revealed that they had warned Rush about the Titan’s safety. Kohnen, chairman of the Marine Technology Association, reportedly sent Rush a letter saying he had misled the public about industry safety standards that meet submersible standards.

Stanley, an expert on submarines, also revealed that he had made a test trip on the Titan in 2019x and had concerns about its safety at the time. He said Rush “designed mousetraps for billionaires.” Meanwhile, Lochridge was fired from OceanGate after he reportedly raised concerns that they had not performed “non-destructive testing” on the Titan’s hull.

However, Söhnlein insisted that the criticism of the four men was a “vocal minority.” He said, “Over 15 years, the company has probably employed like 200 people and has immersed dozens of people. And you only hear from four people.” He claimed that hundreds of others “did not have a voice that disagreed with those four.”

One of Cameron’s key criticisms of the Titan submarine was its carbon fiber design. The renowned deep sea explorer said carbon fiber is widely recognized as an unsafe material in the deep sea diving community. During a recent interview with Radio TimesSöhnlein agrees with Cameron’s statement that the deep sea diving community is small.

He said, per Daily Mail, “We all know each other. I think, in general, we all respect each other. But as you would expect in a community like this, there are completely different opinions about how to do things – how to design submarines, how to engineer them, how to operate in a sub.”

However, he insisted that all the experts who have spoken out since the tragedy including him have no real knowledge. He said, “None of us is involved in the design, engineering or testing of submarines. So no one can speculate from the outside.”

In him Radio Times interview, Söhnlein also called out Cameron and other experts for saying OceanGate was reckless. He said he was involved in developing the company’s submarines early on and knows for sure that they are “very committed to safety and risk reduction.”

Söhnlein also defended Stockton against criticism of his decision to use carbon fiber for the submarine. He said, “The world only had one leading expert in using carbon fiber to go into the deep ocean, and he’s gone now.”

Regardless of his claims, Cameron insists the submarine has “three potential points of failure.” He said the decision to use carbon fiber for the hull and cylinders was the Titan’s “Achilles heel”.
