Oklahoma dad who fled car wreck that killed 16-year-old daughter seen with black eyes in mug shot

An Oklahoma man with a history of leaving the scene of an accident has been arrested for allegedly fleeing a car crash that killed his 16-year-old daughter and injured other family members.

Elliott Binney, 41, appeared with two black eyes and other facial bruising in his mugshot hours after the rollover accident.

Officers responded to a one-vehicle crash in Bixby around 9:20 p.m. local time Thursday, 2 News reported, citing the Bixby Police Department.

Binney’s teenage daughter, Shelby, was thrown from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at a hospital, authorities said.

He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, they added.

Three members of his family – including an adult and two primary school children – were also hospitalized following the accident, 2 News said.

Police arrested Binney about 50 miles from the scene in Checotah on Friday morning, the outlet reported.

Witnesses allegedly saw Binney, 41, driving about 70 miles per hour and passing several cars in the restricted zone moments before the crash, authorities told 2 News.

A witness also recalled seeing a man standing outside the family’s SUV after the crash, the unnamed individual told the outlet.

When he asked the man to sit down and asked who was still in the car, however, the man reportedly appeared confused and fled, they alleged.

Police now believe that Binney initially fled on foot before getting into a second vehicle.

“He walked into a family business and got a vehicle. We were able to electronically track this vehicle and ultimately make an arrest in the case,” Bixby Police Chief Todd Blish told FOX23.

When officers went through Binney’s car, they found vodka and several pill bottles with labels torn off in the front seat, according to the recording.

Binney told officers the crash was caused by him hitting a gas station and running off the road, FOX23 reported.

There was also a bottle of vodka at the scene, and Binney admitted that the family bought the liquor and he drank it while driving, the outlet added.

By the time Binney was arrested, too much time had passed for a DUI test, 2 News explained.

Binney’s wife, who was in the car at the time of the crash, told police they had been arguing before the crash.

Binney was eventually charged with leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, first-degree manslaughter and passing a vehicle in a restricted zone, 2 News reported.

Binney was bonded out of jail on $102,100 bond, the outlet said.

Thursday’s tragedy was far from Binney’s first brush with the law: His extensive criminal record includes three prior charges of leaving the scene of an accident, which were dismissed in 2010 and 2016, 2 News reported.

Shelby Binney – who is a sophomore at Bixby High School – is remembered by her cheerleaders as a “bright light” with a “heart of gold.”
