Egyptian archaeologists are working to restore one of the Giza pyramids to what they believe it looked like when it was erected some 4,000 years ago — a plan they’re calling the “project of the century.”
Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, announced last week an initiative to resurface the exterior of the Menkaure Pyramid, the smallest of Giza’s three main pyramids, with hundreds of granite blocks that once covered the ancient structure.

Archaeologists plan to use the same original granite blocks, which have been strewn around the base of the pyramid since it fell and can be seen in photographs dating back to the 20th century.
The team, led by a combination of Egyptian and Japanese experts, will spend at least a year studying and planning the initiative before the international team decides whether to proceed with reconstruction.
There was some opposition to the plan, with some critics complaining that the smooth blocks would look odd next to the pyramid’s existing vented surface.
