A former “confidant” and campaign manager for Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s inaugural committee co-chairman lobbied on behalf of US Steel in the year before its acquisition by Japan’s Nippon Steel, according to state disclosures.
Vanessa DeSalvo Getz, one of Pittsburgh’s “Power 100” who has “raised millions of dollars for political candidates and charitable organizations,” according to City & State outlet, worked on Casey’s statewide race before serving as his western Pennsylvania campaign manager. successfully ran for the Senate in 2007.

“From early reports, this deal appears to be a bad deal for Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania workers,” he said. “I worry about what this means for Steelworkers and the good union jobs that have supported Pennsylvania families for generations, for long-term investment in the Commonwealth, and for American industrial leadership.”
Casey’s possible GOP opponent in the Pennsylvania Senate race is striking back position X the same day, accusing him and President Biden of undermining US manufacturing.

US Steel accepted an offer of more than $14 billion from Nippon after rejecting a lower offer from rival Ohio-based steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs.
“Bob Casey has fought to protect America’s domestic steel industry, support Pennsylvania workers, and curb lobbyist influence while David McCormick has spent his business career shipping American jobs overseas and selling out to foreign enemies like China,” Casey’s Senate campaign manager, Tiernan Donohue, told The Post.

According to a 2022 Senate financial disclosure, McCormick has between $250,001 and $500,000 invested in Luxembourg-headquartered ArcelorMittal, a multinational steel company that competes with US Steel and has laid off Pennsylvania workers in recent years.
“Dave is not opposed to Americans holding investments in foreign companies. He did object to foreign countries owning US Steel,” Elizabeth Gregory, McCormick’s spokeswoman, told The Post.
Casey defied his party’s expectations when he backed the steel tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump and backed his successor to keep them in place.
He also had harsh words for “foreign competitors” like China who “undermine our companies by circumventing international trade rules” and has introduced protectionist bills to that effect, though some never passed the Senate.

Most recently, Casey successfully introduced requirements into the signature legislative package signed by Biden, including provisions for electric vehicle manufacturing in the $1.2 trillion infrastructure act and tax credits for renewable energy companies that use domestic steel in the Inflation Reduction Act.
However, the provisions have carve-outs that allow steel, iron and other materials to be purchased elsewhere when facing problems such as excessive costs or low quantities available domestically.
Casey also advocated lobbying reforms in Washington – some of which were more successful than others. An act passed during his first year in office restricts lawmakers’ ability to accept gifts from lobbyists or immediately take positions with their own K Street firms after leaving office.

His campaign paid more than $500,000 to a printing company co-owned by his sister, Margi McGrath, during his state and federal political career from 2005 to 2022.

The report was requested by Casey following a series of investigations into the issue published by the Dallas Morning News.
Senate ethics rules would bar Casey’s staff from contacting lobbying family members, and his office has confirmed it complies with those guidelines.
Representatives for Shapiro, Getz and the United Steelworkers did not respond to requests for comment.
