Doctors Say Orlando Bloom May Never Walk Again

In honor of World Mental Health Day, which is marked on October 10, the actor took to Instagram to reflect on the tragic injuries he suffered in his last year as a teenager. Bloom, at the time, fell several stories from a window while climbing a rooftop terrace with friends when a drain pipe he was scaling collapsed.

Although the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star was lucky to survive the fall, the aftermath was not so good. He had to reconcile himself to the thought that he might never walk again because of the effects of the injury.

“When I was in the hospital, I was told for the first four days that I might never walk again,” the “Lord of the Rings” alum said, per E! “That was really the beginning of a long and painful journey for me to recognize and understand some of the patterns that had been going on in my life that caused me to have so many accidents.”

Fortunately for Bloom, the initial prognosis did not hold true, as she was able to leave the hospital with the aid of crutches in almost two weeks. However, the next few months of his life were quite harrowing and took a huge toll on him both physically and mentally.

“I would say the months after fall are a pretty dark time,” he added. “As someone who has always been very active in my life, it suddenly felt limited, and I was in a lot of pain.”

During the recovery process, the actor had to do a lot of self-reflection, which helped him organize the kind of life he wanted to lead.

“I would say that for me, the injury created time and space for me to look at my life, to recognize what is good and great in my life,” said the UNICEF Goodwill ambassador. “And the fact that I had this recovery and then built it into the way I lived my life.”
