Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was behind the decision to kick Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer out of their Capitol hideout offices, one of which the ousted speakers intended to move, according to a report.
Just a few hours after Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) was named House speaker pro tempore following a historic vote to remove McCarthy (R-Calif.) as speaker on Tuesday, an email sent to Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Hoyer (D-Md. ) told them to vacate their informal office space near the House floor.
A GOP aide told The Post Wednesday that Republicans “heard the same thing” about the removal of the office reported by CNN.
“I think it’s part of a larger rift between Dems and Republicans in the House,” the aide said.
“Many mainstream Republicans think that Democrats will come to McCarthy’s aid (perhaps some turnout) when push comes to shove and not actively help Gaetz,” the staffer added. “Any chance McCarthy can dig into Pelosi and the Dem leadership he’ll take.”
The office Pelosi holds has traditionally been given to the previous speaker of the House. An APA spokeswoman for Hoyer told The Post that the former House majority leader has also been asked to vacate his hideout office in the Capitol. EPA
Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.) told reporters Wednesday that Pelosi’s former office would go to McCarthy.
“Look, the deal is that the office that Pelosi is in now is the previous speaker’s office. Speaker Pelosi and other Democrats decided they wanted a new… speaker, and it was Kevin McCarthy. So, he got an office,” he said.
Pelosi, who served as speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023, slammed the move.
“This expulsion is a sudden departure from tradition,” the 83-year-old speaker, emerita, said in a statement. “As Speaker, I am a former Speaker [Dennis] Hastert a much larger office suite for as long as he wanted.”

Pelosi, who missed the vote that led to McCarthy’s ouster because she was in California mourning the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, added that “office space is not important to me, but it seems to be important to them.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ (D-NY) staff helped clear Pelosi’s office late Tuesday, according to Politico.
The full House is expected to vote on a new speaker next week.
