Outraged Florida mom stopped from sharing book featuring nudity and sex acts at school board meeting

A Florida police officer stopped a shaken mother from presenting an explicit image she found in a school library book during a board meeting.

Julie Gebhards of Tampa said she was surprised that a school review panel approved the graphic novel “Blankets” after complaints from parents – even though it was full of nudity and detailed descriptions of sex acts.

After Gebhards advised the audience to leave the room if accompanied by children, he explained the contents of the book in detail.

“The book also contains this crude talk: ‘Church camp is the best place to score p—y,'” he said. “Also: ‘Are you upset with him?’ It features images of masturbation, naked boys urinating on each other and sexual assault on children. … I imagine we’re all uncomfortable right now.”

At one point, Gebhards held up an oversized image from a book depicting two young people in bed with a woman’s breasts exposed.

Video of the encounter shows a police officer stationed nearby approaching Gebhards and taking the display from his hand and placing it on the floor.

Seemingly shocked by the intrusion, Gebhards pointed out that the book was challenged by Hillsborough County parents but later unanimously approved by a seven-person panel at Plant City High School.

“This is at a children’s library here in Hillsborough County,” he said. “Approved by the committee unanimously.”

The mother said the volume was clearly not suitable for school-aged children – and included references to “erections, stroking breasts, biting, tasting, oral sex, undressing in heated passion, 22 images of horny couples, 10 images of her breasts. .”

“This is shameful, disgusting and degrading,” he told the panel.

Board Chair Nadia Combs quickly moved on to the next public speaker at the end of Gebhards’ two minutes.

“Thank you,” he said. “Next speaker. No one is allowed to bring displays.”

Gebhards continued his speech despite being asked to hand over the microphone.

“These are in the library books in your classroom,” he said before leaving the podium.

He posted a video of his comments to the board on Instagram, generating surprising comments.

“The fact that this is happening all over the US, and right under the noses of mothers everywhere is atrocious,” said one respondent.

Florida law allows parents to formally challenge books provided to students, but those challenges are then accepted or rejected by school administrators.

About 2,300 students attend Plant City High School — which counts current Florida Attorney General and Ron DeSantis close associate Ashley Moody as a graduate.
