Over 500 students absent, ‘scared’ after Washington state high school intrusion of masked attackers

More than 500 high school students were absent from Washington state high schools on Tuesday, after a small squad of masked individuals caused chaos during the Monday school day.

The Auburn School District told Fox News Digital that 532 students were absent from Auburn Riverside High School on Tuesday, after an incident shook the tight-knit school community.

“We had an incident on Monday that was widely publicized which contributed to the number of students absent from the school [Tuesday],” said a spokesperson from the school district.

Brandy Garber, whose daughter goes to the high school, said that she kept her daughter safe following the incident.

“He’s scared. Then on the other hand, he wants to go to school because he feels his grades are going down with me stopping him. But as a parent, what do you do?” Gerber told local news station KIRO-TV.

The Auburn Police Department said on Monday, five masked men approached the side door of the school building around 1pm and entered the classroom.

The intruder ran through the hall and pushed four students and punched another, Auburn police confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Garber told the news station that her daughter said that chaos ensued after a masked intruder entered the school’s hallway.

“He said everybody started running,” Garber told KIRO-TV. “They said people came in and masked themselves and pushed people off the street.”

School administrators immediately swung into action, chasing the individual from school grounds, police said.

“Administrators chased after them and quickly got them out of the building,” said a spokesperson at the police department.

Law enforcement said they believe the situation stemmed from a fight on school grounds last week.

Following the incident, the local high school went on a “safe and teach” curfew for the rest of the day. The outer and inner doors are closed and locked, and students stay in their assigned classrooms.

Police said, throughout the week, additional officers have been present on school grounds, and at football games.

Superintendent of Auburn Riverside Dr. Alan Spicciati told KIRO-TV that the school intends to “take very serious action.”

“We have many students and families who are upset about this. I am disappointed. And we will take some very serious actions because when you make a choice, there is accountability,” said Dr. Spicciati.

Authorities are still investigating the incident, and say the unruly individual should not have been on campus.
