Pallavi Dey (1997-2022), also known as Pallabi Dey, is an Indian actress and model, who works in Bengali television. As of 2022, she is playing the role of ‘Gauri’ in the Bengali TV series ‘Mon Mane Na.’ On 15 May 2022, he was found dead in his rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata.

Pallavi Dey made her acting debut in 2017 with the Bengali TV series ‘Tobu Mone Rekho’ as Supriya.

In 2018, she appeared in the Bengali television historical soap opera ‘Aami Sirajer Begum’ as Lutfunnisa Begum. The show stars Sean Banerjee as the male lead. Although the show was short-lived, Pallavi enjoyed a good fan following as the female lead. She came into limelight after playing a meaty role in the TV series ‘Resham Jhanpi’ (2018).

Death
On 15 May 2022, Pallavi Dey was reportedly found dead in her rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata. According to the police, he was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room. The investigating officer in an official statement said,
The actor was found hanging from the ceiling fan with the help of a sheet. The incident happened at about 9.30 am. A case of unusual death has been registered.”
As soon as the police reached the spot, he was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital, Kolkata, where he was declared brought dead. Based on preliminary investigations, police suspect Pallavi committed suicide. Speaking about it to a media person, the investigating officer said,
Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, a final conclusion can be made only after the post-mortem report is available. We have started an investigation after filing a case of unusual death.”
The police also questioned Sagnik Chakraborty (Pallavi’s boyfriend) who told the police that he had gone out to buy some cigarettes from the market and on his return, he found the door locked from inside. He breaks the door and finds Pallavi’s dead body hanging from the fan. He immediately reported the matter to the police.
Although the police suspect it to be a case of suicide, Pallavi’s family claims that there was foul play. Speaking to a media person, his father, Nilu Dey, said,
His partner had a registered marriage with another person two years ago and we found out about this six months ago. There was another girl he was close to and it often caused problems in their relationship. We don’t know who saw him hanging.”
They told the police that Chakraborty had forced Pallavi to pay for the apartment they bought in Rajarhat. However, Chakraborty’s mother while denying the allegation said,
The flat in Rajarhat that Pallavi’s parents claimed was bought with her money, was bought by us. Pallavi did not contribute anything. We have paid Rs 43 lakh in cash and taken a loan to pay the remaining amount.”
Her parents also claimed that Chakraborty was financially dependent on their daughter, Pallavi. Both of them have bought a luxury apartment in New Town worth Rs. 60 lakhs (at Pallavi Dey’s expense).
However, Sagnik’s parents denied all the allegations and said that Pallavi and Sagnik never had any major problems. While talking to a media person, Sagnik’s mother said,
They used to live together. Although we don’t fully support it, we allow them because they are adults. Several times I have asked Sagnik to live somewhere else and start living together as soon as they get married. They don’t have any major problems. I don’t know what happened.”
Later, Pallavi’s father lodged a complaint with the Kolkata police against Sagnik, alleging that he and a woman had killed his daughter. Based on the complaint of Pallavi’s father, Sagnik was called to the Garfa police station on 16 May 2022 and was interrogated for about 18 hours at the police station. Later, he was arrested for concealing important information about his job and his joint financial investments with Dey. According to Atul V., deputy commissioner of police in charge of the south suburban division of the Kolkata police, Sagnik Chakraborty has been charged under IPC sections related to murder, cheating, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and dishonest misappropriation of property. He further stated that the arrest was based on the financial fraud committed by Chakraborty. Speaking about Chakraborty to a mediaperson, the investigating officer said,
Several inconsistencies have been found in Chakraborty’s statements regarding his work and source of income. We found out that he had closed his office in Salt Lake a week before the victim died and was now unemployed. He, however, did not say so when we asked him about his profession.”
Pallavi’s post-mortem report showed no signs of injury and confirmed the actress committed suicide.
The news of his death shocked his fellow actors and fans. Many of his co-stars mourned his death on social media. His co-star from Mon Mane Na Samm has expressed his pain on his Instagram account. He wrote,
I have no words to justify what I witnessed today. Such an event is unthinkable even in one’s wildest dreams.”
He further said,
You will always be my first wife on screen. No one else will be Gouri Rudra.”
