Parents claim daughter, 11, was forced to sleep in bed with transgender student on school trip

Angry Colorado parents have claimed their 11-year-old daughter had to share a bed with a transgender female student on an overnight trip to Washington DC and Philadelphia to comply with school district policy.

The young girl, identified only as DW, reportedly only found out that the fifth-grader she was assigned to sleep with on the first night of the June trip, her mother Serena Wailes said.

“His roommate informed him that he was a man who identified as transgender,” he told Fox 31.

“He was scared and very upset about the idea of sharing a bed with a biological boy, even though he had a good relationship with this other student.”

DW repeatedly had to ask custodians at Governor’s Farm Elementary School to let her move to another room, said Wailes — who accompanies her daughter on an annual school trip.

She was only able to move after several hours and negotiations, but was told she had to lie about why she changed rooms because the transgender fifth-grader was in “silent mode” with her identity protected under Jefferson County Public Schools policy — which Serena and her husband Joe’s lawyer from Alliance for Defending Freedom argued is “unconstitutional.”

They are now demanding that the school board inform parents in advance of the gender of the student their child will be expected to share a bed with.

Attorney Kate Anderson pointed out in a letter to Superintendent Tracy Dorman that Serena was repeatedly assured that boys’ and girls’ rooms would be kept on separate floors in a hotel, and that students needed special permission to travel between them.

She said Serena then asked to meet a travel companion in the hotel lobby after receiving a whispered phone call from her daughter, informing her that she was supposed to be sleeping in bed with a transgender student.

“School administrators asked Wailese’s daughter if they could just move her to a different bed from a different room,” Anderson wrote in a letter sent Monday, obtained by The Post.

“Although he was still uncomfortable with this arrangement, he agreed to try it for one night as he was tired after a long day of travel.”

The letter goes on to say that school custodians told DW to lie to her roommate about the reason for the bed switch, claiming she just wanted to be closer to the air conditioner.

But one of the roommates, who didn’t realize the student was transgender, then asked the transgender student if she wanted to switch beds as well.

“It then took the girl and her parents several requests to move her to another room,” claimed the Alliance for Defending Freedom.

“However, the chaperone told the girl to lie about why she was transferring because of the district’s overnight room policy — a policy that violates parents’ rights and student privacy by placing students based on gender identity while hiding that information from parents and other students.”

Finally, a school custodian decided to move the natural boy to another girl’s room.

Meanwhile, even after the girls in DW’s room were informed that the student was transgender, they were asked to keep quiet.

Under the school district’s policy, the needs of transgender students will be assessed on a “case-by-case basis with the goal of maximizing the social integration of students, providing equal opportunities and minimizing stigmatization of students.

“In most cases, students who are transgender should be assigned to share overnight accommodation with other students who share the student’s gender identity is consistently affirmed at school.

“Any alternative arrangements should be prepared in a way that allows the student’s transgender status to be kept confidential,” he said.

The policy also states that “under no circumstances” would transgender students be required to share a room with a child “whose gender identity conflicts with their own.”

Anderson argued in his letter that the policy “violates the religious beliefs of our clients and their children, the rights of their parents and other parents in your district and the privacy rights of all students.”

“Every parent should have the information they need to make the best decisions for their children,” Anderson said in a statement.

He suggested the district provide parents with a policy before school trips to allow “them to work out ahead of time, who their child will be rooming with, without revealing anyone’s identity or who will be scheduled to room ahead of time. .

“They could just tell the parents, and let them opt out ahead of time,” Anderson suggested on Fox 31.
