Parrotheads mourn death of ‘Margaritaville’ maestro Jimmy Buffett

The Parrotheads are in mourning, but the outpouring of tributes for the late “Margaritaville” singer Jimmy Buffett from his fan base is a touch more magical than tragic, to borrow from one of his more famous lyrics.

“Enjoying that cheeseburger in Paradise forever,” is a simple message popular on social media.

“It’s 5 o’clock somewhere,” write another fan. “You will always be with us. I will make sure not to step on the top of pop.”

“No words. Waking up to this news was not something I expected,” Shiba Normie writes at X. “I’ve been a Parrothead most of my life. Jimmy’s music has been with me in all of my best memories, and some of my lowest. Surfer’s fin, I’ll see you at the end of the world.”

Buffett, who built a $1 billion empire from his simple songs, died on Friday at the age of 76.

The cause of death was not immediately given.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1 surrounded by family, friends, music and his dog,” the tropical rocker’s loved ones said in a statement on Instagram. “He lived his life like a song until his last breath and will be missed by many.”

“Deeply saddened by the loss of such a bright and joyful voice in the world of music,” ABC News reporter Deborah Roberts writes. “Jimmy Buffett died at the age of 76. You can’t drink a margarita without thinking of him and his hit song “Margaritaville”. She brought joy and beach vibes to many of us. RIP.”

“He waited until summer was over,” wrote the author and podcast host Tim O’Brien.

Buffett’s death was announced on social media just months after he was forced to pull some of his plans following a series of hospitalizations.

Speaking to fans in May, Buffett said he had to “sort out some issues that need immediate attention,” before jokingly adding, “Getting old is not for sissies, I promise you.”

Buffett, whose hits include “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” and “Trip Around the Sun,” earned his stripes as one of the most endearing names in music with a career spanning 60 years.

Before his death, Buffett was preparing to release his new album, “Songs You Don’t Know by Heart.”

Only a few sounded a sour note on social media.

“Jimmy Buffett somehow created a huge entertainment empire out of a simple little novelty song that somehow became the official anthem for lazy middle-aged people who like to sit around doing nothing,” journalist Michael Tracey writes.
