Passenger trapped in airplane toilet says he was hurt in landing, got no medical aid

He was already blushing with anger.

A SpiceJet passenger who was stuck in a bathroom for most of the flight has complained that he was injured during landing and did not receive medical help.

The unnamed 37-year-old software technician spent nearly 100 minutes locked in the Indian low-cost carrier’s compartment on a flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Tuesday.

A newly emerged video shows a distraught flyer trying to open a door while sitting on top of a room in a cramped toilet. The handle was seen moving as a crew member tried to open the door.

“I was traumatized, dazed and injured because I was thrown in the toilet. When the plane landed in Bengaluru, there was no medical help at all,” the man told the Times of India.

The Koramangala resident said SpiceJet offered him a $60 equivalent voucher for the bad flight but he turned it down and plans to sue the airline.

He also said he filed a complaint with India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The passenger returned to Bengaluru after meeting his family in Mumbai, according to news channels.

“Immediately after the flight took off at 2:10 on Tuesday morning, I went to use the toilet on the front left side of the plane,” he said. “Within a few minutes, I realized that there was something wrong with the lock and I tried to open it.”

The crew slipped a note under the door to try to calm the commode captive.

He said he managed to get the attention of the crew, who tried to open the damaged door.

“It’s getting scarier by the day,” he told the newspaper.

A SpiceJet source told the outlet that the cabin crew noticed that the door was stuck and they slipped the man a note asking him not to panic.

“Our master tried his best to open the door, but we could not open it [it],” the letter read. “Don’t panic. We’ll be landing in a few minutes, so please close the lid of the commode and sit on it and save yourself. As soon as the main door opens, an engineer will come.”

SpiceJet said the passenger received “help and guidance” as well as “immediate medical support.” Reuters

The unbound captive said he was injured when the plane landed.

“During landing, I was thrown and injured. It took 20 minutes for someone to start breaking down the door. When I came out, I had bruises and my vision was blurry for a while,” he told the outlet.

“But I did not receive medical help even after coming out of the toilet. I got a bottle of water and an apology from SpiceJet,” the man reportedly said, adding that airline staff put him in a taxi and sent him home despite his request to lodge a formal complaint.

“He is still stuck in the cramped toilet. The landing was horrible because he was sitting on the commode,” the worker said.

SpiceJet told the Times of India that the crew “provided assistance and guidance to passengers. Upon arrival, an engineer opened the toilet door and passengers received immediate medical support.

“SpiceJet apologizes for the inconvenience caused to passengers,” he said, adding that he would be given a “full refund.”

A one-way flight on route 600 usually costs about $40, a search on the airline’s website revealed.
