Paul Reubens, the actor best known for playing Pee-wee Herman, died Sunday night after a personal battle with cancer. The 70-year-old was unrepentant even after his death, posting a posthumous statement on his Instagram that read, “Please accept my apologies for not revealing what I went through six years ago. I always feel great love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I love you all so much and love making art for you.”
Along with Reubens’ passing, all hope for any Pee-wee Herman revival is also now over, as one fan commented, “I’ve never had a celebrity death impact me like this. I was devastated.”
Another man who looked equally shaken was Reubens’ friend Joe Manganiello who took to Instagram a few hours ago to say, “Man… this is tough. It’s so hard to say goodbye when you know you’ll never see someone who means so much to you. Someone who believes in you, fights for you, and sees things in you that most people don’t. Everyone should be lucky to have a friend like that. Well, I did, and today I have to say goodbye.”
Here’s more from Pee-wee Herman himself, as the family and estate of Paul Reubens took to Instagram to announce his passing.

Fans will remember Pee-wee Herman for his bright red tie, gray suit and slicked-back haircut, delivering catchphrases like “I know you, but who am I?” with an almost nasal and high-pitched voice.
Fans took the narrative forward, using this Pee-wee catchphrase to say goodbye to Paul Reubens:
“‘I know you are there but what am I?’ I’m sad.”
“Today’s Non-Secret Words: Thank You and Goodbye”
“Today’s secret word is “farewell”. Thank you for being such an important part of my childhood.
Manganiello also added more poetry to his tribute writing further, “Today the world lost one of the greatest comedic geniuses of all time. Paul is subversive, brilliant, witty, and has the biggest heart on the planet… anyone on his Birthday mailing list will know what I mean…”
He went on to add, “He was a visionary way ahead of his time and had one of the scariest eyes for talent I’ve ever seen. He’s responsible for breaking out so many incredible actors (see everyone in Pee Wee’s Playhouse), directors (Tim Burton), and composers (Danny Elfman). He is an artist and a queer who fights for other artists and queers and the world is a better place for having him in it.
Here’s Reubens, posting the drive last Sunday, because even in his passing, he had to make it funny, if poignant!

Joe Manganiello is in the middle of divorce proceedings with Sofia Vergara. While there is no malice in this marriage dissolution, the end of a relationship is always difficult, for anyone. Fans felt Manganiello when he wrote a beautiful tribute for Reubens, as one sympathizer, “When I saw that Paul passed, I remembered you man and was very sorry for your loss.”
Reubens and Manganiello starred in the 2016 film, “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday” and they’ve been friends ever since, as Manganiello wrote, “He’s one of the most recognizable faces in the world, an icon, but he’s still somehow this lovable underdog. I so happy that I got to be a part of his life and finally his comeback. I see how hard he shows up for people and his work with such joy. I feel lucky that I can always be there for him when he needs me… best friend forever. RIP.”
Many felt the loss of Reubens today and some Instagram users, who tried to remind the world about the child pornography charges against Reubens were quickly shut down – neither time nor place. RIP Paul Reubens and goodbye, Pee-wee!
