Paulina Porizkova Recalls Bizarre ‘Dare’ With Late Husband Ric Ocasek

Model Paulina Porizkova took to Instagram to reminisce about the freaky dare she gave Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. The two tied the knot in 1989 and were married until his death in 2019, although they had separated and were going through a divorce at the time.

The first Central European woman to appear on the cover of swimwear magazine Swimsuit Illustration shared a photo of her sitting in a restaurant where she gave her husband a strange “dare” 39 years ago.

The “Anna” actress, now 57, took to Instagram on Monday morning with enough stories for her thousands of social media followers. He shared a photo of himself sitting in a booth at the Odeon restaurant as workers worked behind the divider behind him.

“I am sitting at a table in the Odeon restaurant, the same table where, 39 years ago, I had my first dinner with the man who would become my husband,” Paulina wrote in the caption. “We were having dinner with the whole band, their manager, and the actor Timothy Hutton, but I hardly noticed anyone else except a tall, thin, graceful man with blue eyes next to me. He sat to my left, at the end of the pew.”

“At one point, in the middle of dinner, and daring me, he stood up and walked over to a small table by the wall where a couple was having a romantic dinner,” he explained. “Without a word, he pushed the condiments and food aside and then stood up on the table, folding his body so that the whole thing would fit on the table, along with the plates and food.”

“He sat there, speechless, for a minute, looking back and forth between the man and the woman, who were gaping at him,” he continued. “Then he got off, and slipped back next to me as if nothing had happened. His bandmates didn’t seem to notice, but I thought he was the most attractive man I’d ever met. Confident and funny in a way as ridiculous as Monty Python.”

“I have to admit- not sure if it would have the same effect on me today,” admitted Paulina, capping her post with the hashtags #betweenjloandbettywhite, #fallinginlove, #ricocasek, and tagging @theodeonnyc in her post.

While some fans called the story “sweet” and “romantic”, others felt that his behavior was “rude” and “disrespectful.”

Actor and author Ali Wentworth was one of the first to comment on the post, writing, “Loved the story!” Another fan agreed, writing, “Sounds like a pretty crazy story.” Another follower commented, “Great Story! It’s the perfect place, the perfect time for your attention to be captured!”

However, other users don’t think that “rude” comes close to describing his behavior. “It’s pretty rude and disrespectful to do that at someone’s romantic dinner, don’t you think……Some guys will do anything for attention. You should have bought the couple dinner at least and apologized,” commented one follower.

“May he pay for their food!” other users agree. “I doubt you will make the same effort today. I find it interesting that he would go to great lengths, probably embarrass himself, to impress/please you,” said a third follower.

Another fan shared, “I love Odeon. I know exactly where you sit. My history there goes back 36 years ago. I’ve seen a few things, but nothing like that. I’m not sure it would make me fall in love, but I had a very different attitude about love and romance 36 years ago than I do today, so I get it.”

Another follower commented, “On the day that might have passed, but not today. And maybe that’s the point of your story? I hope it won’t have the same effect on you today. At the time it was different and that’s okay. I love Ric’s music. I listen to it on my walkman all the time.

Other fans seem more interested in the menu. “The Odeon in 1984! Curious about the menu then versus now. Do they still serve Pimm’s cups? Forest mushrooms?” asked a fan. Paulina simply replied, “No!”
