Model Paulina Porizkova, 57, is often candid about what it’s like to be an aging woman in the public eye.
Madonna, 64, experienced this firsthand after a photo of her face at the Grammy Awards went viral. In an Instagram post, the “Material Girl” singer clapped back at those who had negative things to say about her appearance.

“I’ve never apologized for any creative choices I’ve made or the way I look or dress and I’m not going to start,” Madonna continued. “I have been humiliated by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all a test and I am happy to do the steps so that all the women behind me can enjoy an easier time in the years to come.”

In an Instagram post on Thursday morning, the Czech-born fashion model shared an article from the New York Times called “Madonna’s New Look Is Brilliantly Provocative.” The opinion guest essay was written by “The Summer Place” author Jennifer Weiner and Paulina found it “very insightful.”
“I’ve received tweets citing my face as an example of aging gracefully, compared to Madonna,” Paulina began. “But what Madonna did, whether by accident or on purpose, was to take away the shame of older women.”

“He forced us to talk about, or at least notice, the biases and judgments of our culture and society. He’s putting himself out there again, seemingly shamelessly, and infuriating,” he continued. “Ms. Weiner is right in calling our attention to the cult of female beauty as something that should be natural.”
“The secret of our beauty must be hidden, because it is a shame to be vain, even when it is hoped to be perfect. We should be effortlessly beautiful. But of course, when we’re judged as effortlessly beautiful, we’re shamed into not being able to relate,” he wrote, adding, “Madonna, love her or hate her, has always seemed fearless in her refusal to accept shame.”

“Was her appearance the result of (perhaps) a reluctance to accept the shame that comes with aging a woman in the public eye, magnified to the extreme, so that she can fend off the shame of aging – by being so obvious about refusing to grow old?” he asked.
“Honestly, I don’t care. I respect her for forging her own path, and am grateful that she was able to help the rest of us speak,” Paulina said ending her speech with her signature hashtag #betweenjloandbettywhite. She also included the hashtags #ageism, #shame, #madonna, #supportwomen, #womensupportingwomen, #effyourbeautystandards and #fearless.

Paulina’s 992k Instagram followers often take the time to comment on her candid musings on aging, and her latest post is no exception.
One fan commented, “Whether you love her or hate her, the media and their barrage of nasty comments about her looks and age is really bad. We as a society can and should do better in supporting women rather than tearing them down.”

Another follower wrote, “I see what she has done as another transformation in a wonderful lineage of turning her body into a provocative piece of art. In my opinion, our discomfort and consideration of her using her body as a living sculpture is the point. And it’s HIS BODY/FACE. We don’t have to look if we’re uncomfortable.”
However, not everyone agrees with Paulina’s views. One user commented, “She’s not shaming women. She’s feeding the narrative that aging women is something we should be ashamed of, instead we should make ourselves like plastic lizards. So please don’t make her empowering.”
The conversation continues.
