On Tuesday, November 8, the stunning supermodel took to Instagram to share a glam selfie, with her long blonde hair styled in loose waves over her shoulders. “Do selfies indicate narcissism, a desire for validation -or for connection?” he asked. “I believe they may be all of the above.”

“Did you know we are programmed to look for faces? There is a lot of scientific research on this topic. We, as babies, first see the faces of our parents. Eyes, nose, lips,” he continued. “The human brain is wired for face recognition, so clearly in fact, that we see faces in inanimate objects!”

“This is called facial pareidolia,” he explains. “What we as humans need are three focal points set within a certain range to interpret this as a face. And from this, we can also interpret emotions! This is why photos of landscapes, interiors, art and interesting objects get less traction on social media than faces. Being good at interpreting faces and emotions is a social skill that helps us survive.”

“So, there’s no need to feel bad about taking — and posting — selfies, whatever your motivation,” she continued. “And all you wonderful and beautiful women (and some men) – my #paulinasnofilterchallenge is still on – I will decide at the weekend. So if you haven’t already, post a selfie of your beautiful self without a filter and hashtag #paulinasnofilterchallenge.”

Fans were quick to show support for Paulina’s message. “I think of selfies as a celebration of ourselves,” wrote one follower. “When I post one, it’s because I want to capture a moment where I love myself and find myself beautiful. I don’t think it’s narcissism. I see it as a way to document the moments when I feel good about myself.” Paulina replied, “We all need a healthy dose of narcissism.”

However, some fans took issue with his well-intentioned comments. “Be careful not to confuse adaptive narcissism (self-confidence, independence, and ability to celebrate oneself) with maladaptive narcissism (entitled, aggressive, unable to connect with empathy, tendency to take advantage of others),” replied one user. . “Under the umbrella of maladaptive narcissism there are 5 types: overt, covert, antagonistic, communal, and malignant. Narcissism itself has become a buzz word commonly associated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is experienced through relationships with family, friends, partners, acquaintances, business relationships, or suffer yourself.

“I can’t speak for Paulina, but she’s very well read on psychology, and I’m pretending to guess she’s referring to adaptive narcissism, which isn’t actually negative,” they added. “We don’t differentiate between the two main categories of narcissism often in dialogue, especially on social media. It’s something that I hope will be a healthy point of discussion from time to time. Thank you for listening to me. Blessings.”
