Pedro Pascal reflects on his film career during a newly released episode Hollywood ReporterPlaywrights Round Table. The actor shared that after his GOT character, Oberyn Martell, died, it sparked a wave of fans wanting to recreate the eye-gouging scene.

He said, “I remember, before, because of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the way my character died. People really enjoy taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes.” Pascal explained that he was so happy with his character’s fame and the show’s success that he would allow fans to literally press their fingers into his eyes.

However, leaving so many hands on his face eventually led to an “eye infection,” according to Pascal. The character, Oberyn, is a member of the ruling family of Dorne and has eight daughters, later known as the Sand Snakes.

Oberyn’s famously violent death occurred in the fourth season, in an episode titled “The Mountain And The Viper.” In the episode, Oberyn fights Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, and brings him to his knees with multiple stab wounds. With Gregor seemingly on the verge of certain death, Oberyn launches his final attack by trying to get Gregor to admit that he killed Elia Martell, his sister.

However, in a surprising few seconds, Gregor manages to gain control of the fight and punch Oberyn so hard that he knocks his teeth out. He then gouges out Oberyn’s eyes with his thumb as he confesses that he raped Elijah, killed his children, and then killed Elijah himself. Afterwards, Gregor crushed Oberyn’s head, killing him instantly.
