The wife of late Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew is hoping a UK auction house will return some of her “Star Wars” memorabilia.
Born in May 1944, the 7’2″ actor played Chewbacca in all his on-screen appearances from 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope” to 2015’s “The Force Awakens”, where he ceded the role to 6’11” Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo.
Sadly, Mayhew passed away on April 30, 2019. Apparently some of his memorabilia, especially from the original trilogy, wound up on the auction block in the UK, and his widow, Angie Mayhew, would like to see them back.
Chewbacca Actor Peter Mayhew’s Widow Wants ‘Star Wars’ Memorabilia Returned From Auction
On Thursday, Peter Mayhew’s widow, Angie Mayhew, spoke to TMZ about the situation. He said that an auction house in the UK has “a ton” of “Star Wars” memorabilia that once belonged to the late actor, “including scripts, call sheets, autographed photos and more.”
Apparently, a couple found the memorabilia in Mayhew’s old home in the north of England when they were cleaning out the attic. They then handed over the collection to Ryedale Auctioneers, claiming that they had no idea the memorabilia had once belonged to the late Peter Mayhew.

Angie Mayhew told TMZ that they, unfortunately, had to leave a box of memorabilia behind when they moved out of the house. Peter had been struggling with serious knee problems at the time and was reportedly unable to get into the attic. Likewise, Angie said that Peter didn’t want her to risk serious injury heading there, either.
Angie told the outlet that Peter took as much memorabilia with him as possible, but had to leave the rest behind. He called leaving all the “Star Wars” treasures behind one of the “biggest disappointments” in his and Peter’s life.

On Tuesday, Angie Mayhew saw that Ryedale Auctioneers had put items up for auction. He contacted the auction house through his foundation, the Peter Mayhew Foundation, but it appears he hasn’t heard back yet.
Angie Mayhew hopes the auction house will return the items so the Peter Mayhew Foundation can display them in the family’s Chewbacca-themed museum in Texas. For now, the items are scheduled to be auctioned next week on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18.
Angie Mayhew Takes To Twitter: ‘It Broke My Heart’
When we moved out of this house, Peter’s mobility challenges made it impossible for him to get into the attic to retrieve these remaining memories. It breaks my heart to see our items being auctioned like this by @angusashworth and @RyedaleAuction1. ~Angie Mayhew https://t.co/9dql4g22Wa

Earlier this week, on February 7, the BBC’s Jon Kay noted that the items were to be auctioned. He tweeted, “How cool is this stuff? Found in the attic of the late Peter Mayhew who played Chewbacca in the original #StarWars movies. Scripts, call sheets and clippings now being sold by @RyedaleAuction1 @BBCBreakfast.”

It is one of Peter and I’s biggest regrets that we had to leave these items, but his knees and joints are so sore that he can no longer go up to the loft to get them.https://t. co/Bc5TqvYI5u

He too retweeted an article about the couple who sold the items to the auction house, wrote, “It is one of Peter’s and my greatest regrets that we had to leave these items, but his knees and joints became so sore that he could no longer go to the attic to get it.”
We had just come from a convention where Peter showed up and there was a water leak so Peter didn’t want me to go there either and we were running out of time. Moving in general is stressful but moving between countries with a 7’4″ disabled spouse, it’s a very difficult time.

When fans asked why others couldn’t get it out, Angie tweeted, “We just came from a convention where Peter showed up and there was a water leak so Peter didn’t want me to go there either and we ran out of time. Moving in general is stressful but moving between countries with a 7’4″ disabled partner, it’s a very difficult time.”
Many fans have expressed hope that the auction house will return items for all “Star Wars” fans to enjoy.
