A fire at DuBois Construction on January 6, 2012, caused significant damage, but the owner was able to rebuild and resume operations. Scott sold his share of the company after being elected governor to avoid any conflict of interest, as DuBois Construction does business with the State of Vermont. He sold his 50% stake for $2.5 million plus 3% interest paid over 15 years. Scott stated that to protect the firm’s bond capacity, he chose to finance the sale himself rather than have the company borrow money to pay for it in full. . Critics claim that Scott’s sale of his share of the company doesn’t fully eliminate potential conflicts of interest, but Scott and the lawyers who arranged the sale on his behalf disagree.
