Philadelphia looters ransack locally owned pharmacy with axes, hammers — cause $150K in damage, theft

Surveillance video shows a group of thieves ransacking a local Philadelphia pharmacy armed with axes and hammers during a wild nighttime robbery across the City of Brotherly Love.

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Northwest Detective Division released footage from Sept. 26 in an effort to identify a suspect wanted by police for burglarizing a commercial property.

A gang of thieves allegedly stole “all the drugs” from a local mom-and-pop pharmacy, police said.

Law enforcement said the estimated damage and theft was $150,000.

Police say that a group of robbers ransacked the Fairmount Pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at 10:50 p.m

Authorities said the gang, armed with hammers and axes, broke into the property by breaking the front window and door.

Surveillance footage captured the moment a large group of thieves entered the gated pharmacy and began stuffing drugs into their sweatshirt pockets.

The owner of Fairmount Pharmacy, Gerald Volgraf, said that the thief was only in his store for “under two minutes” but managed to do “a lot of damage.”

The group also stole about $68 from the register along with prepackaged prescriptions at the pharmacy.

Volgraf said that he was first informed of the robbery from his tenant, who lives directly above the pharmacy.

“About 3 o’clock this morning, I actually got a phone call from our tenant in the apartment above the pharmacy,” Volgraf told FOX 29. “When I got here, the gate was torn down, the store was a mess, there is a ton of debris, a ton of damage. There is medicine missing.”

The small business owner said the theft was a setback, but not the end.

“We’re open at 9 o’clock this morning, and we’ll be open at 9 o’clock tomorrow,” Volgraf told FOX 29. “We’re not going to allow someone to do something like this that will break our spirit and break our commitment to the community.”

The footage of the pharmacy robbery comes weeks after Philadelphia faced two nights of looting across the city on September 26-27.

Photos of the devastating incident show a sporting goods store in a mall with busts and shoes strewn about; Apple stores and T-Mobile stores with dropped phones and accessories; and several businesses with broken glass windows and broken metal gates.

Authorities made more than 50 arrests, including a burglary suspect who was out on bail for a capital murder case from last year.
