Philly cop killed in airport parking garage shooting as he arrived for work: ‘Numb moment for us’

A Philadelphia police officer was killed and another injured inside an airport garage as they tried to stop a car theft late Thursday night.

The shooting happened inside a parking garage at Philadelphia International Airport shortly after 11 p.m. as officers began their shift with the department’s Airport Unit, police officials said.

The two officers, aged 50 and 60, had just exited their vehicle in the garage when they “observed several individuals hitting another vehicle,” Interim Commissioner John Stanford said.

One of the suspects then allegedly opened fire and hit the 50-year-old officer several times in the body.

The officer, a 22-year veteran with the department, was pronounced dead at 11:34 pm inside Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

He leaves behind a wife and a child, according to NBC 10.

“The officer that has been identified … who was killed tonight, he is married with a child, they are here in the hospital, as you can imagine, heartbroken and devastated that their family members are not coming home tonight,” Stanford added.

Police have not released the officer’s name, as they give his family time to notify additional family members.

The second officer was hit in the arm and taken to Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition, according to Stanford.

One of the suspects may have been taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia by private car, where they were pronounced dead.

Stanford could not confirm whether the person who died at CHOP was involved in the shooting but said the individual was “very similar to the description of the suspect.”

Philadelphia police officers have been shot several times this month, including three times last week, which has drawn frustration from Stanford.

“A numbing moment for us tonight to once again face something like this. We only had three officers shot last week and then tonight.”

“So you can imagine what we feel, you can imagine what this department is going through, and frankly how this city feels to know that this is happening to two men who have served them twenty-plus years and finally one gave his life tonight for the city of Philadelphia,” he added

Police have opened an investigation into the shooting and are looking for several suspects and are looking for a vehicle originally reported to be a Dodge Durango.
