Pilot, 82, vanishes in home-built plane after taking off from Michigan airport doing ‘routine flight’: cops

An octogenarian hobby pilot went missing after taking off from a Michigan airport Sunday morning in his homemade plane, police said.

Richard Martin, 82, was last seen as he took to the skies from the Dowagiac Municipal Airport around 11 a.m. as part of a ceremony Sunday following breakfast at a local diner, WWMT reported. When he did not land several hours later, the pilot was reported missing.

“It’s a routine flight for him, just for fun, usually his flights last an hour or more on average, he lives in the area,” Oscar Azevedo, Dowagiac Municipal Airport Manager, told the station.

“It’s something he often does when the weather is nice.”

He crashed the Sonex Aircraft, an experimental aircraft he built in 2005, WWMT reported.

Azevedo said usually when Martin flies, his wife sits in a lawn chair basking in the sun.

“The time frame is too long so he took time to come back this time,” said the airport manager.

Authorities are currently searching for Martin in a county north of Dowagiac, police said.

Dowagiac Deputy Police Chief Kevin Roman told WVPE Martin does not typically file a flight plan and not on Sunday.

“We have several tips coming in that mention low-flying aircraft, or erratically flying aircraft,” Roman said, according to the radio station.

“But there’s nothing like, ‘I saw the plane physically crash.’ We have never heard of anything of that nature.”
