Pilot killed after helicopter crashes into New Jersey canal: cops

A helicopter pilot was killed after the helicopter suddenly crashed into a canal in New Jersey on Thursday evening, according to a report.

The single-engine Robinson R22 helicopter crashed into the water after leaving Princeton Airport around 3:25 p.m., according to local police and the Federal Aviation Administration, according to Fox NY.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, was killed despite rescue efforts.

“The pilot sustained major injuries and life-saving efforts were not possible,” Ryan Jim Ryan, deputy chief of the South Brunswick Police Department, told reporters Thursday afternoon at a news conference near the crash site, NJ.com reported.

No injuries were reported on the ground, police said.

The helicopter was found at the scene submerged in about 3 feet of water. Responders pulled the pilot from the water to shore but he succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane fly erratically before it plunged to the ground.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, the FAA told The Post in a statement.

The pilot has not yet been identified.
