Pittsburgh public schools approve measure to instruct teachers on ‘White supremacy’ in math classes

The Pittsburgh Public School Board has voted to hire a consulting group that educates teachers on how to replace “cultural practices of white supremacy” in math instruction with methods centered on “the well-being of students of color.”

On October 25, the board approved a measure to give Quetzal Education Consulting $50,000 to eliminate racism in math classes.

As reported by The Center Square, the consulting group stated that its workshops teach “antiracist mathematics” and will help equip teachers with the tools to “identify, disrupt and replace” practices that perpetuate White supremacy.

Ebony Pugh, Director of Public Relations and Media Content for Pittsburgh Public Schools, confirmed to Fox News Digital that the Pittsburgh School District Board of Directors authorized her office to sign the contract with Quetzal.

The move will provide schools with “additional foundational knowledge of antiracist math pedagogy and tangible learning experiences that can be implemented with students.”

Quetzal will provide support through an introductory workshop for math teachers and a leadership series for administrators.

The school board’s agenda for the meeting confirms the purpose of the introductory workshop, which will confront “oppressive practices in mathematics teaching with practices that center the health of students of color and to provide opportunities for mathematics departments and mathematics teachers to develop their antiracist mathematics praxis. collaboratively in pedagogy and teaching .”

It was also confirmed that participants in the leadership workshop series will “engage in an ongoing series of workshops on the topic of anti-racist math leadership.”

“The purpose of this series is to equip educators who have completed the Anti-Racism Mathematics Workshop Series 1 to develop and lead towards a more cohesive and aligned mathematics teaching praxis across classrooms, departments and schools. Participants will learn how to train others in anti-racist math topics, as well as how to identify equity issues in the math space,” the school board tab added.

Several schools, organizations and states have issued guidance and promoted teacher programs aimed at eliminating racism from mathematics.

In 2021, the state of Oregon defended its “Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction” teacher training, which advises that the focus on finding the right answers in the classroom is an example of schools infiltrating White supremacy.

“The purely objective concept of mathematics is false, and teaching it even more so,” reads the document for the “Equitable Math” toolkit. “Supporting the idea that there are always right and wrong answers preserves objectivity and the fear of open conflict.”

Similarly, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is hosting a webinar in 2022 that discusses anti-racist math and calls for the elimination of all instances of “tracking,” which they claim is a form of “spiritual murder” inflicted on children of color through math.

Tracking is defined as a method used by high schools to group students based on ability, IQ and achievement.
