Plane skids off runway, hits building just hours after separate crash landing

Two planes have reportedly run off the runway in Tanzania in East Africa just hours apart.

The first was a plane carrying about 30 passengers from Zanzibar to Kikoboga in Mikumi National Park on Tuesday, local time.

As it attempted to land, its main landing gear collapsed, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway and come to rest on its nose gear, belly of the fuselage and both wings, Aviation Herald reported.

Then about six hours later another plane with the same number of passengers took off from Kikoboga bound for Zanzibar when it suffered a nose gear collapse, went off the runway and the wing hit a building, according to the publication.

No injuries were reported but both planes were said to have sustained significant damage.

Tourists go to Mikumi National Park to see wild animals including zebras, lions, elephants, hippos and giraffes, as well as more unique animals such as sable antelope, African wild dog, blue wildebeest and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.

Tanzania’s National Park Authority confirmed the incident, in which two planes separately suffered gear collapses and runway excursions, according to Aviation Herald.

Pictures from the scene after the second incident show the first plane on the grass while smoke billows from what appears to be the second plane in the background by a building.

The Tanzania Times reported that the runway remains open with operations running as usual, but the Aircraft Accident Investigation Branch under the Transport Ministry will further investigate what happened.
