Police call special back up after 5 million ‘angry’ bees fall from truck

This is one way to create buzz.

A box containing 5 million bees fell off a truck in Canada early Wednesday morning, causing a sticky situation for a group of local beekeepers in action, collecting the buzzy insects from the road.

Halton Regional Police Service officers were called to the Guelph Line in Burlington, north of Dundas Street, at about 6:15 a.m. after a truck carrying the yellow and black insects lost its load.

“We’re not sure how or what exactly happened but at some point, a box containing bees or beehives slipped off the trailer and spilled all over the road,” HRPS spokesperson Ryan Anderson told CBC News.

Beekeeper Luc Peters, who was called to help by police, described the shocking incident as “an extraordinary case.”

According to Peters, who cares for nearly 400,000 bees at the nearby Royal Botanic Gardens, large swarms of bees will usually stay in their hives instead of flying freely.

“It sounds bigger than most because a bee colony can be 80,000 bees,” Peters said.

“It depends on how many colonies there are and no doubt to non-beekeepers it’s quite intense to see regardless… It’s important for people to understand that honey bees are quite gentle and really don’t bother people unless they’re disturbed . This is a rare situation where you have to keep your distance from them,” added Peters.

Police urged drivers passing through the area and nearby residents to close their windows.

Shortly after 9 a.m., police said the bees were nearly cleared.

“Thanks to the encouraging response from the beekeepers who came to help us expect the scene to be more or less clear. 30 minutes. The majority of the bees have been safely collected and the crates will be taken away,” the police said.

Although several of the beekeepers who helped were stung – a common occurrence in the workplace – no one had to be taken to hospital.

Peters said the bees were likely returning from a pollination service, which is when farmers hire beekeepers to pollinate their crops when they pick up droppings from trucks.

“They are [the bees] had a worse day than all of us,” Peters added.
