Police chief fired after twice asking captain’s wife for nude photos on Snapchat

A married North Carolina police chief was fired after he repeatedly asked his captain’s wife for nude photos on social media, as his subordinate named his successor as the city’s top cop earlier this month.

Jon Clark, who has served as Mars Hill’s police chief since 2021, allegedly solicited contact with Captain Chad Wilson’s wife last year, asking for topless photos via Snapchat.

“Your actions in attempting to have a romantic relationship with the wife of one of your officers is reprehensible,” Town Manager Nathan Bennett wrote in an Oct. 16 letter. 2023, and was acquired by WLOS.

“To actively solicit that relationship is inexcusable and puts your entire Department and Mars Town Hill in jeopardy,” Bennett added in Clark’s termination note.

The woman did not respond to Clark’s request and shared a screenshot of the objectionable inquiry with her husband, who then shared it with Bennett.

After reviewing the messages, Bennett hired an independent investigator to look into the allegations, with notes showing Clark had lied to both of them when he was confronted about his actions.

“[Your] blatantly telling me untrue things and the investigators working for the City left me with no choice but to fire you.”

The law enforcement officer allegedly confessed to Bennett to text the woman, according to the News-Record & Sentinel.

Clark has been with the Mars Hill Police Department since 2016 and shares three daughters with his high school sweetheart, the outlet added.

Clark was also accused of being defiant by leaving a meeting with Bennett and immediately communicating with the police department and “victims of his conduct,” which the city manager also considered blatant.

Along with the obscene request, Bennett said the former police chief demonstrated the unsafe use of weapons provided by his department and the improper use of city-provided vehicles.

“Carrying your firearm in your office where you do not store it in a locked and secure place is completely contrary to all concepts of firearms safety, especially for law enforcement officers,” the letter said.

“Obviously having reached this decision at this point in our relationship, I have no choice but to tell the Criminal Justice Standards Commission,” Bennett added.

Earlier this month, Chad Wilson was named Clark’s replacement effective January 1.

“I’m excited to lead this department and move it forward,” Wilson told the News-Record & Sentinel, but declined to talk about Clark’s firing, saying it was a personnel matter.

“He’s a hard worker,” Bennett said. “He loved the job, and did an excellent job with it. It just makes sense. So, we’re excited to continue, and get back on track.”
