An Egyptian policeman opened fire on Israeli tourists in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, killing at least two Israelis and an Egyptian, according to Egypt’s Interior Ministry.
The Extra News television channel, which has close ties to Egypt’s security agencies, quoted an unidentified security official as saying that another person was injured in the attack, which took place at the site of Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria.
It said the suspected attacker had been arrested.
Security forces immediately surrounded the attack site.
An amateur video that went viral on social media showed at least three ambulances apparently taking the victim to hospital while bystanders watched behind police barricades.
Israel’s Zaka rescue service reported two people were killed in Alexandria.
Sunday’s attack comes as Israel is battling Palestinian terrorists after a major incursion from Gaza.
Egypt made peace with Israel decades ago and has long served as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
But anti-Israel sentiment is running high in the country, especially during terror attacks.
