Poop scoop: DeSantis confronts Newsom with map of public ‘human feces’ in San Francisco at debate

WASHINGTON – GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis confronted California Democrat Gavin Newsom with a map of the public sighting of “human excrement” in San Francisco during a debate between polls Thursday.

DeSantis uses the human waste map as he argues that California has loosened itself under Newsom, who was mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

“This is a map of San Francisco. There are many plots about it. You might ask, what is the plan? Well, this is an app where they plot the human excrement found on the streets of San Francisco,” DeSantis said, holding up a brown-colored representation of the city’s geography.

“And you see how almost all of it is protected. Because that’s what happened in one of the largest cities that this country ever had. Human excrement is [sic] now a fact of life, except when a communist dictator comes to town,” DeSantis said, referring to claims San Francisco tried to sweep homelessness and drug problems under the rug during last month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“Then they clean the streets,” DeSantis said.

There are multiple online mapping projects that attempt to document public feces, including those by Open the Books as well as efforts by members of Rio Hondo College on the ArcGIS platform.

DeSantis, 45, and Newsom, 56, are the only debaters in the Fox News showdown hosted by Sean Hannity as they seek to establish themselves as the next generation of leaders for their parties. Polls show former Republican President Donald Trump, 77, and Democratic President Biden, 81, are likely to win their party’s presidential nomination early next year.

DeSantis averaged 13.6% support in the GOP primary in recent polls — second only to Trump at 62% — and Newsom is widely seen as running a quiet campaign for Democratic approval should Biden be unable to continue or decide to retire.

The Florida governor also brought a printout of the debate about animated sexual situations from the book “Gender Queer” to counter Newsom’s contention that the DeSantis administration banned the book from schools — citing some of the content as age-inappropriate.

“Gavin Newsom, [at] at one point, he tried to say that California is the State of Freedom. I just laughed, like, you lock people up [during the coronavirus]you’re doing all this,” began DeSantis, who in 2021 pardoned people arrested for violating his own COVID-19 restrictions, such as a beach ban.

“And then I thought about it — you know, California has freedoms that some people, that other states don’t have,” DeSantis continued.

“You have the freedom to defecate in public in California, you have the freedom to pitch a tent on Sunset Boulevard. You have the freedom to create a homeless camp under the highway and even light it up. You have the freedom to have an open drug market and use drugs. You have the freedom if you are a legal alien to get all these taxpayer benefits.

“It’s not the freedom our Founding Fathers envisioned, but they have contributed to the destruction of the quality of life in California,” DeSantis said. “And the results speak for themselves. People leave the state because [state pols] has failed to deal with the homeless population.”

Newsom responded by taunting DeSantis’ “shit about freedom.

“I mean, here’s a guy who’s criminalizing teachers who’s criminalizing doctors, criminalizing librarians and criminalizing women getting their reproductive care,” Newsom said, referring to Florida’s restrictions on abortion and school discussions of sexual orientation and gender expression.

“You make it harder to vote, you ban books. I mean, spare me this notion of freedom,” Newsom said of his adversary.
