ISLAMABAD (AP) — A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan on Sunday, more than a week after a powerful earthquake and aftershocks killed thousands and leveled entire villages in the same region.
The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the latest quake was about 34 kilometers (21 miles) outside Herat, the provincial capital, and eight kilometers (five miles) below the surface.
Save the Children said four people had died and Herat Regional Hospital had received 153 injured people. Everything in the Baloch area of Rabat Sangi district has collapsed. Several villages have been destroyed, according to aid groups. Authorities have given a lower death toll.
Sayed Kazim Rafiqi, 42, a resident of the city of Herat, said he had never seen such destruction before with the majority of houses damaged and “people are terrified.” Rafiqi and the others head to the hospital to donate much-needed blood.
“We need to help in any way,” he said.
Earthquake on Oct. 7 leveled entire villages in Herat, in one of the deadliest earthquakes in the country’s recent history.
The people of Herat are calling for help, surrounded by unprecedented destruction.
More than 90% of the people killed last week were women and children, UN officials reported Thursday.
Taliban officials said earlier earthquakes had killed more than 2,000 people across the province. The epicenter was in the Zenda Jan district, where the majority of casualties and damage occurred.
The initial quake, numerous aftershocks and a second 6.3-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday flattened the village, destroying hundreds of mud-brick houses that could not withstand such force. Schools, health clinics and other village facilities also collapsed.

Apart from the ruins and burials after the destruction, there are few villages left in the dusty hills of this region. Survivors struggle to come to terms with the loss of several family members and in many places, the surviving population outnumbers the volunteers who came to search for debris and dig mass graves.
